i think if you make an rp server for them, people would go in there just to bug the rpers....the rp server would have to be heavily monitored by a GM to stop this from happening...i can just hear it now, guild chat,"Hey guys lets go bug the rp freaks"....

Actually modding wouldn't be necessary.
I imagine paying out RP players would occur as frequently as PKing does in a number of other MMOs. Having been a player of such games myself, I can tell you that PKing and Ganking doesn't occur as much as people make out, it's just a pain in the rear when it does. The community, nonetheless, often mods itself, "carebears" running pk-killing teams. Certainly it doesn't get ALL of the offenders, but it often keeps their numbers down.
So how does this relate to GW? /report. Simple as that. We can report for offensive language use, unsolicited harrassment, scamming, etc. Simply allow for the reporting (special or not) of people who abuse the RP district.

It will depend on your character a lot of the kids want to be a drunken warrior who stand around shouting abuse at everyone! Hang on that's not rp that is in game! LOL ;p
You let you fellow rpers know what your character is about, so you may be an ele who craves for the attention of others but does not like necros. Therefore they will spend lots of time in converstaion with others but will not talk to a necro and even not join a group if a necro is in the group.
The idea is to set up a character and think and act like the character.
Yes in a way we do rp a little but when we interact with others we act as ourselves and not our characters! Each character will have a code and set of morals that they work towards. Warriors acting like knights etc... charcater development goes even to the stage of getting married!

Am I the only one that occasionally roleplays with henchies while doing a mission? Like, it'd be me, 7 henchies, and I'd pretend to be some hero guy and sometimes I'd type stuff out like "FRET NOT DEAR LINA! I SHALL SAVE YOU!"... and other such stuff?
No? Just me? Okay.

For the record...
This is Old English:
Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonum,
Si þin nama gehalgod.
To becume þin rice,
gewurþe ðin willa, on eorðan swa swa on heofonum.
urne gedæghwamlican hlaf syle us todæg,
and forgyf us ure gyltas, swa swa we forgyfað urum gyltendum.
and ne gelæd þu us on costnunge, ac alys us of yfele. soþlice.
Those good old Anglo-Saxon stylings. If you're like me, you'll recognize every third or fourth word, but not much more than that. Basically, the stage english was in between the Romans leaving and the Normans arriving. But since all of nobody can actually speak it (a slight exaggeration), I doubt many people rp in it.
What most people think of when they say "Old English" is actually early modern english - roughly c1500-c1750 - but since languages change gradually it really forms more of a spectrum and any roughshod compartmentalizing is rather meaningless.

It's the prayer "Fader Vår" (Our Father, who art in heaven...). Literal translation:
"Father ours you be in heaven,
your name is hallowed.
Tobecome <actually a norse word which I don't know how to translate to English, meaning approximately "to be given to"> your kingdom,
be your will, on earth as in heaven.
Our daily bread give us today,
and forgive us our sins (actually more like "debt" than sin, presumably because there was no pre-christian word for sin), so we forgive those who owe us (ie have sinned against us).
And do not lead us in <costliness = ?something that will cost us dearly? Again there wont have been a pre-chistian word for temptation>, and release us of our faults.
Very interesting. The structure of sentences and actually most of the words are the same as in Norse. I'd have thought it was Norse if you hadn't said it was Old English.

English is, at its root, Germanic, and at one point shared very much in common with other languages of that family. The Anglo-Saxons spoke a very similar language to people living in Germany and Scandinavia.
The first major factor to split English off from its linguistic brethren was the Norman conquest. Even though the Normans were originally germanic-speaking people themselves, their stopover in northern France had them speaking a langue d'oïl, which was very much a romance language (derived from latin). When they found themselves lords of England they simply kept using it, or at least tried to. And that's why we have so many synonyms - there's usually a Germanic root (big), a French root (large), and often a word that someone has taken directly from the Latin (enormous). Although most of the French also comes from Latin. So it's the difference between one degree and two degrees of seperation.
Also, without any sort of central authority to regulate it, people (notably authors or poets) were free to make up words largely to suit there whims. Shakespear's a great example of this. In addition, the spread of English (later, British) power and influence world-wide led to the adoption into English of many words of foreign and/or indiginous origin.
And there you have it - a brief sketch of the history of the English language. At least, as I understand it. I suppose I should include a disclaimer that I've never had formal education on subject. I'm not too sure what exactly this has to do with RPing in Guild Wars, but hey, whatever's interesting deserves to be posted. Somewhere.

Often considered seeking out the rp community, then decided against it, after all, my main char (mes male) is based on a rp character.. who's anti-social, swears more than enough for the entire district and would probably get me banned for being offensive.
Be intersting to learn how to rp in game though, and most of my chars do have a personality, which gets acted out to a small degree.

I think everyone to one degree or another acts differently when they're playing on different chars. I know I, without intending to, speak differently on my ranger than I do on my monk, or on my ele. No idea why really...

I noticed that I do that too. My monk is the friendly, talkative, slightly sarcastic one, while my warrior is the uber l33t pwning one. Also, when I first create the characters, I have some idea in my head about their personalities and how they act. One thing I like to do is to write fan fiction about my ingame characters, so that is sorta like Role Playing.

Ultimatly the difference between playing a role and an RP server is that in the RP server you have *no* thought as to the "game". You are totally acting as if you are a character in that game. You do not talk about AoE, running out of energy/health, do not call treasure "drops", enemies "mobs", or most of the other things or "where do I get X skill".
You pretend as if you could do all of this in real life and how would you talk to someone. You wouldn't say "Wait, I have to adjust my attrbiute points - you want me to spec in fire" - people do not have attribute points. I don't know how the accepted GW way of dealing with this is (GW is not horribly RP friendly) and some of it would be personal. As long as you are not talking game mechanics it's usually accepted.
It's "RP'ing" vs "playing a role". RP'ing has a faily strict way of acting, the other is just using a good imagination. You can RP in *any* game and all games have some level of playing a role (just as books do - at some level you are playing not as yourself). In the end it's all of us trying to have fun. Some really like the strict, some less strict (where I normally play - and to someone above, yes I do talk at the henchies sometimes), some almost none.

Oh! I had thought my meager little thread had died a while ago!
Well I'm glad I didn't, I sort of liked that copy of the old-english Lord's Prayer. Now that I'm more aware of that language's existence I think I'll study up on it! thx. Insight is always appreciated.

But how do you really RP in a computer game? It seems impossible. I have not played a RPG- ie. D&D, Gamma World, Twilight 2000, Runequest, Warhamer the RPG,Vampire (and assorted spin-offs), Ringworld, Call of Chathulu, etc - for about 10 years. It seems like it would be very difficult to really RP with other people in game. You just have so little control over the game world, so little interaction. No Dungion Master .(or is it called Game Master?) Everything is limited. Not to say that you can't play a role and use your imagination to expand the game. But making it into a real RPG? How does it work?

There will never be an RP district for the sole reason of people going into it and disrespecting the RPer's. Anet knows this and thats why its not being implemented.

Kendar walked into the room upon hearing a lively discussion about the merits and drawbacks of a role=playing district in guild wars, which, after hearing several questions about rp, decided to explain.
"Now children, roleplaying is a delicate art. You cannot have too much detail or too little, and you must act as if everything is happening right before your very eyes. This is exceedingly hard to do in the International Districts of our favourite game do to the rather small character limit. I would suggest that any of you who like to rp or who may want to do that, create a new guild for roleplaying only, and have fun- get your kicks."
Upon ending his short speech, Kendar rose slowly, as if he had a great deal upon his mind, and departed.
Thats a pretty crappy example of what a good rp would look like, but there you go. The reason ID just doesnt work is because of that character limit... unless the roleplaying they do is more like an in game larp. Roleplaying in an online RPG is just too convoluted, tyvm, lol.

Skids McZebbedie got up from his crudely errected sun lounger and scratched his sacks. The fungus was obviously returning he thought to himself.
Turning to gaze upon the 3 girls laying worn out on the ground at his feet he chanced to see that his computer screen was flashing. "Ahha" he muttered; "another Guru post for me to reply to".
Careful not to tread on the girls - especially the Necromancer who was a bit of a grump when woken, he made his way to the keyboard and a half empty keg of Rice Wine. Having sated his thirst, passed wind and had another blessed scratch he sat at the desk and clicked the mouse.....nothing happened!
"Not again" he thought. "I'd hoped that Damned Cleric had fixed the ruddy thing last time for good...wait till I get a hold of him". Grabbing for the telephone Skids suddenly realised to his disgust that this was all a huge pile of crock and he had work to do before his boss came back.
"Odds bodkins and begad me follicles" Skids shouted, reached over his shoulder and with a deft motion born of countless battles he cleanched the haft of his longsword, withdrew it from its scabbard and swung it at the monitor.
The sword cut a blurry scythe through the screen, resulting in sparks of electricity and shards of glass being thrown about.
"Aye - that'll do nicely" Skid's thought, and walked off to the coffee machine.

Thx!
It was very interesting reading all your posts.
I never played D&D, but now I know what RP means.
I used to play Diablo/DiabloII and I thought RPGs were synonymous of people playing games alone with no connection to the internet = multiplayers.
Silly me, after all I'm still a noob!
